Martin A. Kuharich 1949 - 2018
Springfield, IL—Martin A. Kuharich, 69, of Springfield, passed away at 7:45 am Sunday morning, June 10, 2018 at St. Joseph's Home. He was born March 11, 1949 in Hammond, IN to Anthony and Irene (Mich) Kuharich. He was married by Reverend Carl Schmidt to Joyce Niebrugge on June 12, 1971 at St. Mary's Help of Christians Church in Effingham, IL. Together they raised two sons, Anthony and Michael, and all three survive him.
Also surviving him include his mother-in-law, Anna Marie Niebrugge, sisters-in-law, Mary Jane (Tony) Koester, Kathleen (Roy) Weber, and Pauline (Mark) Weber.
He was preceded in death by his parents and father-in-law, Leonard Niebrugge.
Marty graduated as President of the Class of 1967 from Bishop Noll Institute of Hammond, IN. He then graduated from the University of Notre Dame, Class of 1971.
He went on to work for the State of Illinois for more than thirty years, finally retiring from the Department of Professional Regulation in 2002. During which time he refereed Illinois High School football and served as Secretary-Treasurer of the Notre Dame Alumni Club of Central Illinois. As many of his friends and family know, he loved Notre Dame and often traveled to see the Irish football, basketball, and baseball teams. He was always excited to see the football team, and over the years attended a total of 394 games either on the Notre Dame campus or at their road and bowl games.
He loved his family, friends, Notre Dame, watching sports, TV, and a good hamburger.
Visitation: 4:00 – 7:00 pm, Wednesday, June 13, 2018 at Staab Funeral Home - Springfield. A prayer service will be held at 4 pm.
Funeral Mass: 10:00 am, Thursday, June 14, 2018 at Christ the King Church with Monsignor David Lantz officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph's Home, 3306 S. 6th St., Springfield, IL 62703, or Sacred Heart Griffin, 1200 W. Washington St., Springfield, IL 62702.
