Mildred I. McKean
SPRINGFIELD, IL - Mildred I. McKean, 97, of Springfield and formerly of Jacksonville, Ill., died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2014, at Concordia Village in Springfield.
She was born March 26, 1917, in the Dog Ridge community of Schuyler County, the daughter of Lloyd E. and Mabel Persinger Byers. She married William R. "Bud" McKean on Sept. 1, 1937, in Vandalia, Mo., and he preceded her in death on Jan. 6, 1998.
She is survived by a daughter, Pamela Beck (husband, Dick) of Springfield; two sons, Gerry McKean (wife, Sandra) of Normal and Glenn McKean (wife, Jane) of Jacksonville; five grandchildren: Andrea Markert, Melissa Romanotto, Krista McKean Ferge, Kimberly McKean, and Katherine French; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Laura O'Neal, and three brothers: Lloyd H., Eugene, and Ralph Byers.
Mrs. McKean received a teaching certificate from MacMurray College in 1936 and, at 19 years of age, embarked upon a long career as an elementary teacher beginning in a one-room schoolhouse, north of Jacksonville. She eventually returned to MacMurray College to complete her bachelors degree, graduating in 1964. Concurrent with her teaching, Mildred also served as a bookkeeper for the C.B. Lewis Elevator in Jacksonville. In addition, she served for a period of time as a Morgan County deputy sheriff under Sheriff Hembrough.
Mildred was a dedicated long-time member of Centenary United Methodist Church, where she served many years as the Sunday School treasurer and was a member of the church's Ruth Circle. She was also a devoted volunteer for the Passavant Hospital Gift Shop and the Doorbell Dinner program. In her spare time, she thoroughly enjoyed playing cards with her family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Dec. 1, 2014, at Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Jacksonville with burial at Diamond Grove Cemetery in Jacksonville. The family will meet friends at the funeral home from 3-5 p.m. on Sunday.
