Nancy Ann DeMarco

SPRINGFIELD - Nancy Ann DeMarco, 61, a loving and caring soul, passed away peacefully Sunday evening, March 17, 2013, after a year-long battle with cancer.

She was born February 28, 1952, in Springfield, the daughter of Oliver M. and Bertha R. Potnik Ippoliti. She married J. William DeMarco and he preceded her in death on June 2, 2001. Her parents also preceded her in death.

She is survived by the best brother anyone could ask for, Mark (Irene Yancey) Ippoliti of Belleville; stepchildren, Steve (Wendi) DeMarco, Jeff DeMarco, Deann (Steve) French and Tom DeMarco, all of Springfield; grandchildren: Nick, Jenni, Missy, Will and Zander DeMarco, and Derek, Kyle and Jeremy French all of Springfield; one aunt, Margaret Smith; and one uncle, Louie DeMarco, both of Springfield; a number of cousins; niece, Sarah Ahmed; nephew, Rafiq Ahmed; and great-niece, Raleigh Ahmed Tramontana, all of Chicago.

Nancy was also blessed to have been survived by so many very special friends who were the family of her heart. A number of these friends took care of her throughout her illness and she wanted to thank them for walking the path with her: Mary and Zia Ahmed, Nancy Green, Karen & Joe Fassero, Bonnie Flynn, Judy Daniels, Ruth Stanton, Rev. Howard A. Peters III, Kathleen Wolf and Michael Pizzuto.

Nancy worked for over thirty years for the State of Illinois before retiring in 2003 as Director of the Illinois Guardianship Commission. Prior to that, Nancy was the first Chief of Staff for the Illinois Dept. of Human Services. She also worked in the Office of Governor Jim Edgar, the Illinois Dept. of Corrections and Children and Family Services.

After retiring from the State, Nancy accepted a position with the Illinois Hospital Association as Director of Development in 2003 retiring in 2012.

From Mark: "Nancy was a wonderful, loving and caring wife, step-mother, sister, friend and caregiver. If you were lucky enough to know and have Nancy in your life, you knew how special she was. Nancy was a very special person who provided so much love and support for so many. She was the pillar of her family. The Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners that she shared kept her friends and family close. Her love was so special and she will be so dearly missed."

Nancy held the belief that it was important to give back to one's community and as such, she was involved in a number of current, and past, professional and civic affiliations, which included the following: member-National Guardianship Assn.; member-Illinois Guardianship Assn, Second Vice President, Board of Directors- YWCA, Springfield, IL, Senior Vice President, Board of Directors-Land of Lincoln Council Boy Scouts of America, Board member-Hope Institute for Children & Families, member, Lea-dership Council-Hope Institute for Children & Families, member- American Correctional Assn., member-Illinois Drug Education Alliance, Certified Illinois Assessment Officer, board member-Springfield Ballet Company, former board member and secretary-Rape Information and Counseling Service, Graduate Assistant-Dale Carnegie Courses.

Nancy was also a member of St. Katharine Drexel Parish and was a member of its Finance Council.

Visitation: 9 a.m. - 12 p.m., Thursday, March 21, 2013, at Sacred Heart Church with a prayer service beginning at 9 a.m.

Funeral Mass: 12:00 p.m., Thursday, March 21, 2013, at Sacred Heart Church with Rev. Peter Harman officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to the St. Katharine Drexel Church Restoration Fund.
