SPRINGFIELD, IL - Rachel A. Brooks, 87, of Springfield, passed away Nov. 21, 2014.

She was born Sept. 12, 1927, in Camden, Miss.

Rachel accepted Christ at an early age. She was a faithful member of Union Baptist Church until her health started to fail. She served as the President of the Mother Board, member of Sunday School, Overall Missionary, Progressive Circle, Eastside Senior Citizen, and AARP. Since residing in Springfield, she was also a previous member of Holy City Missionary Baptist Church.

Rachel retired from Springfield School District #186 as an Environmental Service Specialist, where she was a loyal employee. She also worked in the health care industry for many years. Her husband, Thomas Jefferson "T.J.", preceded her in death, as well as her mother, Precious Westbrook Lyons, and father, Lee Scott, and her two sons, Willie and Wesley Brooks.

She leaves behind 10 children: Elizabeth Jean, Tom Lee, Dessie Ree, Erma Lee (Paul), Clementine "Penny", Edward Charles, Gloria Jean, Bernard, Geraldine and Annie, and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 29, 2014, at Union Baptist Church, 1405 E. Monroe St., Springfield, IL 62703. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. with service to follow at 11 a.m., Pastor T. Ray McJunkins officiating. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Rachel Brooks was like my second mother from the time I can remember. I was so happy when her and her husband moved to 14th Street with their family years ago. I love her and she will always be in my heart although she is gone. I had a card for her to send to the Nursing Home, but I keep thinking "Mom" knew the stamp wasn't on it yet, but somehow this Godly woman received it. God Bless the family. Sending Blessing, Prayers and Best Wishes during your time of loss.
