Reta A. Hardesty
DENTON, TX - Reta Alice Smothermon Hardesty, 96, passed away Feb. 5, 2014.
She was born Dec. 12, 1917, in Aubrey, Texas, to William Everett Smothermon and Mary Naomi (Blake) Smothermon. She attended Spring Hill and Aubrey schools as well as the Univ. of North Texas and Texas Woman's University. She married George Hardesty on June 29, 1940, in Denton; they enjoyed 53 years together until his death in 1993.
Reta was a stay-at-home mom and is survived by her daughter, Susan of Springfield, Ill., and sons, Mark (Kathy Barrett) of Durango, Colo., and George (Shanna) of Denton, Texas. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Guthrie and Mullaney Hardesty of Durango, Colo., and Megan Hardesty of Denton, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; brothers, J. W. (Skeet), Ralph and Fred Smothermon; sisters, Willie Mae Griffiths, Christine Sills, Anna Rue Smothermon; and twin sister, Leta Smothermon.
In 1962, Reta and George moved to Jacksonville, Ill., where they resided until their retirement in 1978. They returned to Texas, leaving behind many great friends and neighbors in Lincolnland.
Reta was very active in church, civic, and volunteer activities throughout her life. She was an avid bridge player and crossword puzzle solver, and will be remembered for her sweet caring soul and good nature. She was a devout Christian, wonderful mother, and loyal friend. She would want to sincerely thank her caregivers at Good Samaritan and Ann's Haven Hospice.
