Dr. Richard L. Stratton

SPRINGFIELD - Dr. Richard L. Stratton, 87, of Springfield, died at 3:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 7, 2013, at Memorial Medical Center. Beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

Richard was born October 19, 1925, in Springfield, the son of Solon C. and Alice L. Beeler Stratton. He married Jeannette Elaine Duda on August 9, 1945, in Springfield.

Richard graduated from Lanphier High School in 1943, University of Illinois in 1945, and earned his Doctorate from Illinois College of Optometry in 1948. He practiced optometry for over 40 years in Springfield, both privately and as Assistant Professor at SIU School of Medicine; he retired in 1998. He was a member of the American Optometric Association, Illinois Optometric Association, Midstate Optometric Society, International Optometric and Optical League, International Association of the Boards of Optometry, and past member and Chairman of the Illinois Board of Optometry.

Rich proudly served his country in the 8th Army Air Force to the rank of Staff Sgt. in B-17s over Europe and was past president of the 490th Bomb Group USAAF Association. He was a member of Woodside United Methodist Church in Springfield and First Presbyterian Church of Port Charlotte, FL. He was an active member of both the Springfield Noon Lions Club (past president) and the B.P.O. Elks, Lodge 158 (past Exaulted Ruler), and the YMCA. He also served as board member and past officer of the Sangamon-Menard Council on Alcohol and Drugs, Secretary of the Triangle Center Board, member and Past Chairman for the Governor's Prayer Breakfast Committee, and was a member of American Red Cross.

Richard enjoyed stamp collecting, woodworking, lawn maintenance, and dancing.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Elbert R. Stratton.

He is survived by his wife, Jeannette of Springfield; children, Pamela Muir of Springfield, Richard L. (wife, Carol) Stratton II of Placida, FL, Janna (husband, Warren) Atherton of Springfield, Kenneth W. Stratton of Houston, TX, and Jim (wife, Jill) Stratton of Canton, IL; eight grandchildren, Steven (wife, Mirandi) Muir, Amy (husband, Stephen) Minch, Natalie (husband, Nicholas) Kucan, Kacie Stratton, Rick Stratton, Cam Stratton and Chris Stratton, and their mother, Debby Stratton, and Carly Stratton; and two great-grandchildren, Katherine and Elizabeth Minch.

Visitation: Family will receive friends from 4:00-6:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 10, 2013, at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield.

Funeral Ceremony: 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 11, 2013, at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, with Rev. Dave Estep officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
