SPRINGFIELD, IL - Robert "Bob" Noble Newman, Sr., passed away Feb. 9, 2014, at St. John's Hospice.
He was born Jan. 1, 1928, to John and Faye Newman in Springfield, Ill. Robert attended Palmer Grade School and Feitshans High School. He married Sarah Dickerson on Feb. 9, 1974.
In 1982, he became a member of Union Baptist Church and became an ordained deacon. He was also member of the Laymen Ministry, the church bus driver, and a member of the Voices of Union until his illness in 2013.
He was employed by Allis Chalmers (Fiat-Allis) for more than 35 years where he retired. He was later employed by the State of Illinois and Memorial Medical Center. He was a great sportsman which included baseball, basketball, and boxing.
Robert is preceded in death by his parents; brother, John Newman; three sisters: Zola, Anne Newman and Bernadine Wheatley; and three children: Gail, Ruthann, and John (Ricky) Newman.
He leaves to cherish his memories his wife, Sarah; sons: Robert "Bobby", Jr., (Cynthia), Terry Graham, and Michael (Malissa) Newman; daughters, Linda Bryant and Toni Newman; 12 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren, as well as great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. - noon, Monday, Feb. 17, 2014, at Union Baptist Church, 1405 E. Monroe St., Springfield, IL 62703, with Pastor T. Ray McJunkins officiating. Visitation is prior to services from10-11 a.m.
Interment will be at Oak Hill Cemetery.
