Chatham, IL—
Rodney Fred Dinges, 78, of Chatham, passed away Wednesday, June 13, 2018 at St. Joseph's Home. He was born September 18, 1939, in St. Louis, MO, to the late Herbert Charles Dinges and Lucille Caroline (nee Husemann) Dinges, later Horrell.
Rodney married Janet Lou Moehrs on June 28, 1958, and they lived together in Red Bud, IL, Orangeburg, S.C., and Marion, IL, before settling in Chatham in 1974. He was preceded in death by Janet on December 31, 2013 and by his grand-daughter, Brenna Cannon.
A lifelong proponent of continued education, Rodney earned a Bachelor's in Political Science from Southern Illinois University, a Master's in Education from South Carolina State College, and a PhD in Education Administration from Southern Illinois University. He began his teaching career at Red Bud High School in 1966, followed by teaching at the Menard Corrections Center in 1970 to further inmate education. After earning his advanced degrees in education, he served the Illinois State Government for 15 years in support of adult education and literacy. He then became a professor of Organizational Behavior at UIS until his retirement as a Professor Emeritus in 1999. In addition to his professional career, Rodney loved St. Louis Cardinals baseball, golf, and reading non-fiction. He coached Khoury League baseball in Chatham for several years and was a strong supporter of Glenwood High School sports teams.
Rodney will be fondly remembered for his tales of growing up in Red Bud, a great sense of humor, and complete devotion to family and friends. He led a value-driven life marked by strong character and unwavering integrity. Simply said, he was always there to help whomever needed it.
Rodney will be greatly missed by his children: Connie Cannon of Springfield, Colleen Dinges (Jeff Cunningham) of Chatham, Catherine (husband Joseph) Iacono of Springfield, IL., and John (wife Harlene) Dinges of Woodbridge, Va.; grandchildren: Ellena (husband Chad) Rickman, Heather (husband Russ) Duncan, Shauna (husband Mitch) Wallner, Jessica (husband Mason) Petro-Gaffigan, Justin Petro, Ian McMillan, Alexis (husband, Dr. Wael) Jaafar, Sean McMillan, Grace Dinges, Lexie Iacono; great-grandchildren Chloe Rickman, Levi Wallner and Raina Jaafar; brother, Kevin (wife Joan) Horrell of Red Bud; sister Andrea (husband Tom) Jenkins of Red Bud; sister-in-law Mary (husband Emil) Reheis of Glendale, Az.; and many cousins and friends.
A funeral service will be held at 4pm, followed by a visitation where his family will greet friends until 7 pm, Monday, June 18, at Staab Polk Memorial Home, 8855 State Route 4, Chatham, IL, 62629.
Private family committal service will be held on Tuesday, June 19 at Chatham Memorial Cemetery.
To commemorate Rodney's fight with Alzheimer's Disease, memorial contributions may be made to SIU School of Medicine, Alzheimer's and related Diseases, 409 West Calhoun Street, Springfield, IL, 62702.
