SPRINGFIELD - Ruth Rose (nee Carter) DeFrates, 92, died peacefully at home at 10:10 p.m., May 8, 2013, with loved ones by her side.
Ruth, born May 22, 1920, was the daughter of Edgar and Pearl (Kosavick) Carter. She married Miles Redding on Dec. 6, 1935. They later divorced. On March 16, 1956, she married Lee DeFrates.
Ruth was a banquet waitress at the Springfield Elks Club for many years, then served as a loving nanny to a number of children until retirement. She liked to play bingo, picnic and walk barefoot. Her greatest joy was to be surrounded by her children and grandchildren at family gatherings.
She will be greatly missed by her sons, Ronald (Betty) Redding and Daniel DeFrates; sister, Crystal Venable; nine grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her parents; brother, Raymond Carter; sons, Robert and Richard Redding; daughter, Sandra Duncan; husband, Lee; and three half-sisters, infant Jacqueline, Lucille Richno and Lillian Marada.
Friends may visit at Ellinger-Kunz and Park Funeral Home on May 13, 2013, from 10-11:30 a.m. with Memorial Service beginning at 11:30 a.m. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the DeFrates Family Memorial Fund and left at the funeral home.
