S. David Ross II, M.D. 1934 - 2017
S. David Ross II, M.D., ascended into heaven on Sunday, April 2, 2017, at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born on January 10, 1934, in St. Joseph, MO to Stewart David and Allena Jansen Ross. They preceded him in death.
David attended the University of Kansas where he graduated with honors in History. He was a member of Phi Alpha Honorary History Fraternity, Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity and a distinguished military graduate. He also graduated first in his class from the University of Kansas School of Medicine where he received the L. L. Marcel Award for outstanding Medical graduate. He served his internship from 1960 – 1961 at the U.S. Army Tripler General Hospital in Honolulu, HI and then his residency from 1961 – 1964 at Brooke Army Medical Center, Brooke General Hospital in Ft. Sam Houston, TX.
He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, first as Chief of General Medicine at 2nd General Hospital in Landstuhl, Germany from 1964 – 1967. David then served as Assistant Chief, Department of Medicine, Chief of General Medicine, Chief of Department of Hospital Clinics at Ireland Army Hospital in Ft. Knox, KY from 1967 – 1968. He was approved for promotion to Lieutenant Colonel at the time of his honorable discharge.
He married Judith Reimer on September 3, 1966, and she preceded him in death in 2011. They have seven children surviving, Erich J. Bloxdorf (wife, Mary), John D. Ross (wife, Amanda), Heidi A. Kerz (Fiancé, Todd Clearwater), Kay M. Ross-Baker (husband, Brett), Julie A. Pabst (husband, David), S. David Ross III (wife, Rhonda) and Jennifer R. Hughes; ten grandchildren, Corie Gillingham (husband, Mark), Allie Wagner (husband, Chad), Rachael and Payne Kerz, Eva Baker, Luke Pabst, Claire Miller (husband, Mason), Kate and Jack Ross, Charlie Hughes and one great granddaughter, Cora Wagner. He is also survived by his brother Robert Ross of Minneapolis and several nephews and nieces.
David began his practice of Internal Medicine with Physicians Group Clinic, S.C. from 1968 to 1994, and in 1984 became President and Chief Financial and Administrative Officer for the group until 1991. He then began working with a division of the Doctors Hospital Network, from 1994 until 1995. David was once again in private practice from 1995 until 2010, when he sold his practice to HSHS where he remained until his retirement in 2014.
David was devoted to the improvement of medicine in Central Illinois as evidenced by his work as Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at the SIU School of Medicine; as a member of the Executive Committee with the Department of Medicine at HSHS St. John's Hospital; numerous committees at HSHS St. John's Hospital and Memorial Medical Center; and a member of the Curriculum Planning Committee and committees to bring SIU School of Medicine to reality.
David was a member of Sangamon County Medical Society, Springfield Medical Club, Federation of State Board of Medical Licensure, American Society of Internal Medicine, Illinois State Medical Society, American Medical Association, Western Germany Armed Forces Medical Society, Order of Internists, U.S. Army, and Fellow American College of Physicians. He also received several certifications, honors, commendations, including American Board of Internal Medicine Certification, National Board of Medical Examiners, American Legion Gold Medal of Merit, Department of Public Health and Safety, and Certificates of Achievement in the U.S. Army.
David also held several offices including Sangamon County Heart Association Medical Advisor; Sangamon County Heart Association President; Illinois Heart Association Board of Directors; Illinois Heart Association President; Illinois State Board of Medical Licensure Member; Medical Director of Public Health and Safety, City of Springfield; Board of Directors Sangamon County Medical Society; and was instrumental in organizing the Department of Public Health in the City of Springfield, achieving certification for the Department of Public Health. David was also published in several respected medical journals.
Visitation: Family will receive friends from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Friday, April 7, 2017 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield.
Private entombment will be at Roselawn Memorial Park at the Ross Mausoleum with military honors.
