William E. Abner

SPRINGFIELD - William "Wild Bill" E. Abner, 91, of Springfield, IL, passed away at his residence on Monday, January 16, 2012. Born February 8, 1920, in Springfield, he was the son of Carl and Flossie Hurt Abner. On January 29, 1944, he married Marie Exum. Mr. Abner was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers and 2 sisters.

Mr. Abner is survived by Marie, his wife of 67 years; daughters, Billie (Ron) Robinson of Athens; Julie (Joe) Kelley of Buffalo, IL; Terri Ostermeier (companion Glen Weisgerber) of Springfield; sons, William Abner of Springfield; Gary (Janice) Abner of Riverton; Earl (Connie) Abner of Glenarm; 15 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; several step grandchildren and great grandchildren; sisters Betty Jane (Dan) Bailey and Helen Marie Abner all of Springfield and several nieces, nephews and a cousin.

Mr. Abner served his country in the Army Air Corps, in India and Burma during World War II as a military policeman. He retired from Pillsbury after 34 years as a fork lift operator. He loved his Harley, his second love, coming only after his wife of almost 68 years.

Visitation: 4-7pm Sunday, January 22, 2012, at Staab Polk Memorial Home, 8855 State Route 4, Chatham, IL. Private family burial will follow at a later date at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield. Military honors conducted by the Inter-Veterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County.
