1st Master Sgt. William Bishop, Jr., Ret.

SPRINGFIELD - 1st Master Sergeant William Bishop, Jr., Ret., "SARGE," departed this life on Feb. 25, 2013, at Memorial Medical Center. William was born Aug. 18, 1928, in Cody, Arkansas, the son of the late William Bishop, Sr., and Ethel (McKinnie) Bishop. William married Mattie M. Scott on May 4, 1957. Mr. Bishop is a retiree of the United States military where he actively served for 27 years. Mr. Bishop was a veteran of the Korean War and the Vietnam War. After retiring from the military, Mr. Bishop worked as a Highway Maintainer, for the State of Illinois. Mr. Bishop was a member of the Free Masons.

William loved his wife, his family and cherished his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

William leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Mattie Bishop; sons, William III and Gregory D.; sister, Jennie B Adkins; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

William was preceded in death by his son, Derrick L. Bishop, four sisters and one brother.

His life celebration will be Saturday, March 2, 2013, with visitation at 10:00 a.m. and Celebration of Life at 11:00 a.m. at Union Baptist Church, 1405 E. Monroe Street, Springfield, Illinois 62703

Mr. Bishop will be buried with Full Military Honors, at 12:00 noon, March 4, 2013, at Camp Butler National Cemetery, Springfield, Illinois.
