SPRINGFIELD, IL - Don Shelby Harwood, of Springfield, passed on to the Glory of God at 3:45 a.m., Saturday, June 14, 2014, at The Regency.
He was born April 6, 1927, in Springfield, to Vivian and Faye Shelby Harwood. He married Ruth Nadine Simpson on Nov. 3, 1951. After 62 years of a loving marriage, she followed him to eternal glory the same day.
His parents, one brother, John Harwood, and one sister, Mary Alice Wheeler, preceded him in death.
Survivors include three children: Mark (Linda) Harwood, Gregg (Paula) Harwood, and Cindi Layendecker, all of Springfield; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Don was a Navy veteran and served his country during the end of WWII. He retired as postmaster for the Capitol Complex after 27 years of service. He was a member of Central Baptist Church and the former Zenobia Baptist Church, where he was actively involved. He was a 32nd degree Mason and also was very involved in Jaycees, volunteered as an usher for Sangamon State Auditorium and volunteered at Memorial Medical Center for 17 years, before retiring his volunteer career to be a caregiver for his wife. He enjoyed being with his family and loved family activities, including many children's and grandchildren's sporting events.
He will always be remembered for his kind heart, his contagious smile and his quick wit.
Family will receive friends from 1-3 p.m. on Sunday, June 22, 2014, at Central Baptist Church, 501 South 4th with a Celebration of Life service at 3 p.m.
