SPRINGFIELD, IL - Robert Joseph Serra, 93, passed away June 17, 2014, at St. John's Hospice surrounded by his four children.

He was born July 14, 1920, to Anthony and Theresa Serra.

Robert was a proud veteran of WWII having served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Yorktown Aircraft Carrier. The Yorktown was involved in major naval battles including Coral Sea and Midway where on June 6, 1942, the ship was sunk. Dad and many crew members were in the water for 10 hours while the battle raged on. Following his naval service, he married Dorothy Coleman on Sept. 25, 1948. He worked in the postal service until he retired. Together, they raised four children and built numerous homes.

Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy.

He is survived by three sons: Tom (Linda), Jim (Jeannie) and Joe (Judi); one daughter, Sandy (Henry); seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 24, 2014, at Camp Butler National Cemetery. The Inter-Veterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County and the U.S. Navy will provide full military honors.
