Elmer F. Requarth
SPRINGFIELD, IL - Elmer F. Requarth, 90, of Springfield, passed away Saturday June 21, 2014, at Memorial Medical Center.
He was born May 20, 1924, in Pawnee to Earl F. and Elsie P. Halford Requarth. Elmer married Catherine Kunz Van Fossan in Springfield on Oct. 10, 1987, and she survives.
He is also survived by two daughters, Myra "Jean" (Phillip) Leib of New Jersey and Phyllis A. (Frank) Terrell of North Carolina; one son, Frederick "Rick" Requarth of Springfield; one granddaughter; one grandson; and two great-grandsons.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Dale Requarth; one grandchild, Sam Leib; three sisters; one brother; and his stepson, Frank Van Fossan.
Elmer was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who entered service on Nov. 11, 1943, left for overseas in June of 1944, and saw action in Guam and Iwo Jima. On March 10, 1945, he was wounded on Iwo Jima and was awarded the Purple Heart. Elmer was also awarded two Bronze Stars and a Presidential Citation.
Mr. Requarth retired from Booth and Thomas Inc. after 39½ years of service, and he was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.
A funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 25, 2014, at Bisch and Son Funeral Home, 505 E. Allen St., Springfield, with burial to follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery. The family will meet friends from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.
