William J. SAMPIAS Obituary

William J. "Bill" Sampias

SPRINGFIELD, IL - William J. "Bill" Sampias died on June 21, 2014.

Bill was born March 26, 1928, in East Chicago, Ind., the son of Joseph and Elizabeth Sampias. He graduated from East Chicago Washington High School and went on to earn a bachelor's degree in business from Indiana University in 1952. He then graduated from the Indiana University School of Law in 1955. While at IU he played baseball.

He married Jalaine Jordan of St. Charles, Ill., on June 18, 1955. He then served his country in the U.S. Army, stationed at Fort Huachuca, Ariz., in the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate. He worked in the steel industry in the Chicago area and retired from the State of Illinois Industrial Commission. He then moved to Springfield, Ill., to be near his grandchildren. He enjoyed being involved in all of his grandchildren's activities.

He enjoyed golf and belonged to the Senior Men's Golf League. He volunteered at Memorial Hospital as a Red Coat. He attended Chatham Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by his wife, Jalaine of 59 years; daughter, Sheryl (John) Polk of Somerset, Ky.; and son, Bill (Sandy) Sampias of Chatham. There are six grandchildren: Jalaine Polk, Dr. Jessica (Ben) Craig, John Wright Polk, Kirstyn Sampias, Noah (Robin) Polk, and Wesley Sampias.

Visitation: Family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 24, 2014, at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield.

Funeral Ceremony: 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 25, 2014, at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
