SPRINGFIELD, IL - Rev. Phineas Frederick Hurst, 69, departed this life on July 4, 2014, at home. He was born July 15, 1944, in Jefferson City, Mo., to the union of Phineas O'Dell Hurst, Jr., and Arnett (Dotts) Daniel. On Sept. 12, 1964, Phineas married Gloria J. Grimes in East St. Louis, Ill.
In 1972, Phineas was employed by the Illinois Secretary of State office and retired after 27½ years of service.
He was well known for his ownership of the Hurst Laundromat (many remember it as a polling place where they voted).
Phineas was a community leader. He was appointed as Commissioner of the Springfield Housing Authority from 1978 through the late 1990's. He served as a precinct committeeman for the 76th precinct. He also was a 32nd degree Mason, Past Worshipful Master at Kamar Temple, Central Lodge No. 3; a Sangamon County Board member; and founding member and owner of the Capital Social Club.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his lovely wife, Gloria Hurst; son, Terrence Hurst (companion, Kemie) of Springfield; daughters, Felicia L. Burton (Shane) of Springfield, and Monica D. Williams (Calvin) of Maryville, Ill.; mother and stepfather, Arnett and John Daniel of O'Fallon, Ill.; brother, Stan Singleton of Los Angeles, Calif.; six grandchildren; one great-grandson; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral Services will be Friday, July 11, 2014, at St. Paul A.M.E. Church, 1130 South 16th Street, Springfield, IL 62703, from 11-12 p.m. Visitation will be 10-11 a.m.
Interment at Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
