Leona M. Varns
SPRINGFIELD, IL - Leona M. Varns, 86, passed away on Friday, July 11, 2014, at the Regency. She was born on Jan. 22, 1928, in Springfield to Henry J. and Lillian M. Lewis Mau. She married Tom Varns on June 28, 1947, in Springfield and he preceded her in death on June 13, 2010.
Mrs. Varns is also survived by three sons, Thomas M. "Mike" Varns of Mesa, AZ., Ron (Teresa) Varns of Glendale, AZ., and Larry (Julie) Varns of Chatham; five grandchildren, Todd (Maria) Varns of Lake St. Louis, MO., Carrie (Scott) Herp of Chandler, AZ., Savannah (Raul) Silvas of Surprise, AZ., Ashley (Dave) Mattingly of Farmersville, IL., and Tom (companion, Amy Ross) Varns of Chatham; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Katie Hoke, her brother, John Mau, and two sisters, Eileen Kelly and Junie Davis.
Leona's proudest career accomplishment was being a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She helped with Meals on Wheels and was a volunteer at Memorial Medical Center and Lewis Memorial Christian Village. Mrs. Varns attended Westside Christian Church where she helped with the For One Ministry; she also sang with the Golden Tones and was a member of the Beau Knot Class.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 18, 2014, at Bisch Funeral Home West, 2931 Koke Mill Road, with burial to follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery. The family will meet friends from 9 a.m. until the time of funeral service Friday at the funeral home.
