SPRINGFIELD, IL - Bill Basso, 87, passed away on Wednesday, July 30, 2014, at St. John's Hospice in Springfield, Ill.
He is survived by his wife Pat; two sons, Billy (Judy) Basso of Lincoln and Steve (Lisa) Basso of Athens; four grandchildren, Debbie Basso of Springfield, Kelley, Katie, and Christopher Basso of Athens; and several nieces and nephews.
Bill was born May 10, 1927, in Athens, Ill., the son of Henry and Fanny Basso.
He married Pat Kern on July 2, 1971, in Springfield.
Bill was member of the Ansar Shrine and Van Meter Lodge in Athens. He was a volunteer Assistant Chief for the Athens Volunteer Fire Department for many years. He was the Police Magistrate for the city of Athens for four years.
He was an avid deer hunter, even successfully hunting last year at the age of 86. Bill was a die-hard Chicago Cub fan. He loved to fish, cook, and garden.
Bill served for the U.S. Air Force during World War II.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of funeral services at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 1, 2014, at the Athens Christian Church.
Rev. Ken Gennicks will be officiating.
Burial will be held at Camp Butler National Cemetery.
Memorials can be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children or to the Athens Christian Church.
