SPRINGFIELD, IL - Clement A. Gotway, MD, 92, of Springfield, IL passed away Sunday, Aug. 24, 2014, at Lewis Memorial Christian Village.

He was born Oct. 8, 1921, in Hardin, Ill., the third son of Edward and Mary Gotway, with two older brothers Norbert (deceased, of Kampsville, Ill.) and Cletus (deceased, of Hardin, Ill.). Dr. Gotway attended Hardin High School and graduated from William Cullen McBride Catholic High School in St. Louis, Mo., in 1938. He was attending Illinois College in Jacksonville when he was drafted into the U.S. Army Air Force during WWII in 1941. In this capacity, he served as the head of the Medical Services Section of the 9th Air Force, 486th Air Group, in England, Belgium and France. After the war, he attended Bradley University in Peoria, Ill., on the GI Bill.

Dr. Gotway received his MD from Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago, Ill., in 1953. He completed several internships at Illinois Central Hospital in Chicago, and completed general practice residency at McLauren General Hospital in Flint, Mich., from 1954-1955. He established his first medical practice in Macomb, Ill., in 1955. In 1956, he married nurse Patricia Kocher (now deceased), of Lima, Ohio.

After completing his residency in internal medicine at Indianapolis General Hospital in Indianapolis, Ind., Dr. Gotway returned to Springfield in 1961 to establish his internal medicine practice with Physicians Group, Springfield, where he practiced internal medicine until his retirement from private practice in 1998. After retiring from private practice, Dr. Gotway remained active in the Springfield medical community serving as an associate of Memorial Medical Center Outpatient Services, and then working as a consultant to the State of Illinois Federal Disability Services until the age of 92.

Dr. Gotway is survived by three children: Carol Anne Crawford of Atlanta, Ga., Susan M. Wallbrown of Glastonbury, Conn., and Michael B. Gotway of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and three grandchildren: Samantha and Stephanie Wallbrown, and Allison Gotway.

Visitation: Family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 29, 2014, at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield.

Funeral Mass: 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 30, 2014, at Christ the King Parish, 1930 Barberry Dr., Springfield, IL with the Rev. Joseph Ring, celebrant. Private family entombment will take place at the Oak Ridge Mausoleum, where his wife, Patricia L. Gotway, was interred in 2011.

Memorial contributions may be made to the SIU School of Medicine, 801 N. Rutledge St., Springfield, IL 62702. The Gotway family is very appreciative of the respect, admiration, and love the Springfield community has shown our parents for more than 50 years.
