MASON CITY - Joe Thomas Burris, Jr., 77, of Mason City, entered eternal rest Sunday, November 7, 2010 at Memorial Medical Center, Springfield, IL surrounded by his family. He was born January 10, 1933 the son of Tommy and Ruby Estes Burris in Green County, KY. He married Joanne Wells on September 9, 1956 in Mason City. She survives.

Also surviving are his four children: Mike Burris of Mason City, IL; Jeff (Shawna) Burris of Mason City, IL; Dan (Debbie) Burris of Mason City, IL and Becky Berberet of Springfield, IL. He adored his ten grandchildren: Donieka, Sierra and Maggie Burris; Kimberly, Becky, and CJ Burris; Adam Watkins; Drake, Ben and Meagan Berberet. He is also survived by one brother, Bill (Betty) Burris, and one sister, Mary Nannen and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Joe was a member of the Mason City United Methodist Church. He was a very devoted father and grandfather and enjoyed the many sporting, school, and scouting events for his grandchildren. He retired from the City of Mason City as Superintendent of Public Works in 1996 after spending 33 years with the City. He remained active in part-time water and wastewater operations in Easton and Greenview Schools. He was a member of Illinois Portable Water Supply Operators Association, Illinois Rural Water Association, and a member of the Illinois Section of the American Water Works Association. He also was active in Community Recycling program.

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, November 11, 2010 at the Mason City United Methodist Church at 10:30 am. Pastor Stephen King will officiate. Visitation will be held Wednesday, November 10, 2010 from 4-7 at Hurley Funeral Home in Mason City. Burial will be in Mason City Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Mason City United Methodist Church or to Mason City Boy Scout Troop 189.
