Freeman, Sr.

Donald E. Freeman, Sr., 74, died at 4:45 a.m. on Saturday, February 5, 2011 at St. John's Hospital Hospice after battling his lung cancer with his wit, strength and God's grace.

Don was born on December 13, 1936 in Decatur, the son of John L. and Thelma E. Frantz Freeman. He married Sonja M. Whitson on November 26, 1955 in Decatur.

He earned his MBA from the U of I in 1981 and worked as a commercial banker and executive vice president at several banks in central IL including, Danville, Streator and Peoria. He retired from banking in 1987 and ran his own consulting firm and was an EBay entrepreneur selling Norman Rockwell prints and Lincoln memorabilia. Don was instrumental in creating Basic Computer Literacy and followed up selling SciTTKits for school science study. He attended Rochester United Methodist Church and enjoyed computers and was an Apple computer enthusiast. Don also enjoyed woodworking, especially picture frames, golf and was a skilled handyman.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Donald E. Freeman, Jr. and granddaughter, Claire Elizabeth Brannon. Don was devoted to his family and especially enjoyed their twelve "Family Vacations" with up to twenty-eight under one roof for an entire week.

He is survived by his wife, Sonja of Springfield; his children, Kathy (husband, Steve) Streitz of St. Paul, MN, Carol (husband, Ed) Brannon of Nashville, TN, daughter-in-law, Kelly Freeman of Bismarck, IL, David (wife, Mica) Freeman of Chrisman, IL, and Alice (husband, Bryan) Bunjan of Glen Carbon, IL; twelve grandchildren, Jason and Kaitlin Streitz, Benjamin and Christopher Brannon, Amy (husband, Wyatt) Cline, Jennifer (husband, Eric) Siddens and Donald E. Freeman III, Jessica (husband, Jake) Tanner and Maura and Ian Freeman, Joshua and Zachary Bunjan and; four great-grandchildren, Payton and Riley Cline, Samuel Tanner and Tinley Siddens; one brother, James, (wife, Kathy) Freeman of Decatur; three nieces, seven nephews and one cousin.

Cremation will be accorded by Butler Cremation Tribute Center prior to ceremonies.

A memorial gathering will be held from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Don's Celebration of Life at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 17, 2011 at Rochester United Methodist Church, 555 S. Walnut, Rochester, IL with Rev. Jack Swank officiating.
