Joan Marie Bivens

Joan Marie Bivens, 53, of Petersburg, passed away at her residence, surrounded by her family after a long battle with lung cancer at 7:20 pm on Thursday, April 28, 2011.  She was born on February 11, 1958 in Springfield to Albert H. and Lillian Jean Painter Poggemiller. On May 21, 1977 she married Christopher Bivens.

Joan is survived by her husband Christopher; a son, Mike (Emily Sue) Bivens of Fancy Prairie; and a daughter, Bobbie Jo (Matt) Decker of Murphysboro, IL.  She is also survived by five grandchildren; Claire, Ann Marie, Brynn, Addison and Callie Jo.  Also surviving are her mother, Jean Poggemiller of Springfield; a brother, Randy Poggemiller of Springfield; and three sisters, Jean (David) Jamison of Beardstown, Susan (Jeff) Bivens of Springfield, and Shirley (Ben) Wilson of Edwardsville.  She was preceded in death by her father Albert Henry Poggemiller.

Joan had worked at Springfield Electric, B&B Electric, The Video Store in Petersburg, Shambolee Golf Course and as a deli cook at Kents IGA.

Cremation rites have been accorded and a memorial service will be held Sunday, May 1, 2011 at 2:00 pm at St. Peter Catholic Church in Petersburg.  A gathering will be held next door at the parish hall from 3:00 to 6:00 pm following the service.  Her family asks that all her friends please join them for a Celebration of Joan's Life on the afternoon of Sunday May 8, 2011 at Shambolee Golf Course.  Those able to attend are asked to RSVP to either:

joansparty@yahoo.com or P.O. Box 172, Petersburg, IL 62675.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Menard County Rescue Squad or Memorial Home Services/ Hospice.  Help someone you love to find a way to stop smoking.
