"Steve" Colyer

EFFINGHAM - Donald S. "Steve" Colyer, 72, of Effingham, passed away in his home on Wednesday evening, June 27, 2012.

Visitation will be on Sunday afternoon, July 1st, from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. at Hall Funeral Chapel in Effingham with the Illinois State Police standing as honor guard. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 2nd, at St. Mary's Cemetery in New Berlin, IL, with military rites. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Crossroads Cancer Center or Sacred Heart Catholic Church, both of Effingham. Online condolences may be left at www.hallfuneral chapel.com.

Steve was born on July 20, 1939 in Olney, IL, the son of Kenneth and Beulah (McKibben) Colyer. He joined the U. S. Navy in 1957 and was honorably discharged in 1960. On May 29, 1965, Steve married Suzanne M. Fromme at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception Church in Springfield, IL, and she survives.

Steve was a dedicated officer for the Illinois State Police and retired after 30 years of service as a Lieutenant in District 12, Effingham, IL. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and was a 33rd Degree Freemason. He graduated from Sangamon State University, Springfield, in 1976 and the Southern Police Institute at the University of Louisville, Louisville, KY, in 1978. He enjoyed golfing, playing cards, and especially his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife; Suzanne; 3 children, Stephen R. (Terri) Colyer of Chatham, Colleen R. Colyer of Albuquerque, NM, and David S. Colyer of Maryville; 2 granddaughters, Amanda N. Colyer of Oklahoma City, OK, and Rachel M. Colyer of Chatham; and a great-grandson, Carter S. Francisco of Chatham; brother, James (Sherri) Colyer of Albion; and sister, Madeline (Charlie) Wells of Albion.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and an infant daughter, Sheila M. Colyer.
