(Bob) Vogelsang

SPRINGFIELD - Robert D. (Bob) Vogelsang, 87, joined his beloved wife, Betty Jo, on July 30, 2012.

Bob was born on April 16, 1925 in Springfield, Illinois, the son of Edwin J. and Annalea (Logue) Vogelsang.

He attended Sacred Heart Grade School and graduated from Feitshans High School.

He enlisted in the U. S. Navy in 1943, served in World War II in the Pacific theater on the USS Barnstable.

He married Betty Jo Henderson on January 18, 1947, and they celebrated 65 years of marriage.

Bob is retired from the Springfield Fire Department and Montgomery Ward. He also worked at City Water, Light, and Power and Thrifty Drug Store.

He was a past president of IAFF Local #37, an honorary member of the Knights of Columbus, member of the VFW, American Legion and Retired Fire Fighters Association. He organized the first shipmate's reunion of the USS Barnstable. He traveled on the Flight of Honor to Washington D. C. in April of 2011.

Bob was dedicated to his family, his community, and his country. Bob played football in high school and boxed during and briefly after his service years. He hunted, fished, and traveled extensively but his greatest enjoyment was playing golf with his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jo, on July 21, 2012, his parents, his brother, Karl E. Vogelsang and sister, Lila (Vogelsang) Kirk.

He is survived by daughters: Carol (Robert) Camp, Pfafftown, NC; Judy (Rochelle Kinser) Vogelsang, Eugene, OR; Barbara Vogelsang, Decatur, IL; Mary Lou (Harry) Berner, Bloomington, IL; three granddaughters; two step grandsons; 10 great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Services to celebrate his life will be held at the Church of the Little Flower, Springfield, IL, at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, August 3, 2012.

Visitation will be one hour prior to service. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, Springfield, IL. Tanzyus-Logan Funeral Service and Care in Decatur is in charge of arrangements.

The family wishes to extend their deepest appreciation to SIU School of Medicine and Sugar Creek Alzheimers and Dementia Special Care Center, and OSF Hospice of Normal, IL.
