SPRINGFIELD - Ruth "Pat" Barstead, 85, of Springfield, died at 2:30 a.m., Friday, Jan. 4, 2013, at Memorial Medical Center. She was born March 17, 1927, in Edinburg, Ill., to Dwight Haven Richardson and Elnora Baughman Richardson.
Preceding her in death were her father, mother, Elnora Thornton, and one brother, Robert Richardson.
Surviving are two sons, Brian (Nancy) Barstead of Rochester and Gregory (Tara) Barstead of Tallahassee, Fla.; three grandchildren, Alex, Matthew and Caitlin Barstead; and several nieces and nephews including Luann Greive of Edinburg, Ill.
She graduated from Edinburg High School and Illinois State University. She married Robert Barstead and they were later divorced. She taught Business Education in a number of school districts starting with Argenta/Oreana and finishing her teaching career at Mt. Pulaski High School. In 1960, she began working for the State of Illinois Bureau of Disability Determination Services. She retired from there in 1989 as an Administrator of Adjudicator Services. Her initial retirement years were devoted to caring for her mother. Later she enjoyed her time playing golf, bowling and reading books. She was a member of First United Methodist Church.
Memorial Gathering: 4 to 7 p.m., Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, at Staab Funeral Home.
Memorial Service: 10 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013, at Staab Funeral Home with Dr. Bob Swickard officiating. Burial will follow at Edinburg Cemetery.
