Thomas "Oonie" Cunningham
PHARR, TX - Thomas "Oonie" Cunningham, 90, passed away March 14, 2013, at his residence in Pharr, Texas.
He was born September 13, 1922, in Springfield, Illinois, the son of Thomas, Sr., and Margaret (Connell) Cunningham. He married Betty Durrell on August 10, 1946, in Springfield. She preceded him in death on April 9, 2005. He was also preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Robert, William, and George Cunningham; sisters: Agnes Herr, Margaret Huckaby, and Violet VanSice; and grandson, Thomas Lanning.
Oonie attended Feitshans High School and served as a munitions worker in the Army during WWII in the European theater. He was a retired firefighter for the City of Springfield. Upon retirement, he and Betty traveled extensively before settling in Mission, Texas, where they spent many happy years.
He and Betty especially loved trout fishing at Roaring River State Park, Missouri. Oonie loved sports and played baseball, softball, basketball, and golf as long as age would allow. In his later years, he was an avid fan of the San Antiono Spurs, Houston Texans, and Texas Rangers, and seldom missed watching their games.
He is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Richard Lanning of St. Louis; granddaughter, Keri Lammering (husband, James); and twin great-grandchildren, Seamus and Breanna Lammering, all of Kirkwood, Missouri; step-great-grandson, Paul Lammering of St. Louis; and several nieces and nephews and their families.
Cremation was accorded by Kreidler Funeral Home in McAllen, Texas. No services are planned. Instead, please remember Oonie as the force and character he was in life, and share a memory of him with someone.
