VIRDEN, IL – Ruth Rishel, 95, passed away at 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 6, 2013, at Sunrise Nursing and Rehab Center in Virden.
Ruth was born in Virden on Oct. 9, 1917, the daughter of David H. and Ruth (Smith) Fox. She married George Rishel on March 6, 1943, in the post chapel at Ft. Sill, Okla. Her husband preceded her in death in 1996 and her daughter Jane Rishel in 2009.
Ruth was a 1935 graduate of Virden High School and earned an associate's degree from Illinois State Normal University in 1939. She taught grades 1 through 8 for two years at the one-room Bois D'Arc country school in the late 1930's. She was the first president of the Kindergarten Parents' Club in 1949 when it pushed for the first kindergarten class in Virden. She was a longtime member of the Virden American Legion Auxiliary and served a term as its president. Prior to her death she was the oldest member of the First Presbyterian Church and served terms as elder, trustee and deacon. She was well known as a sales clerk and then owner of Smith Dress shop in Virden, closing it in 1991 after nearly 69 years in business.
Surviving are her son, George Rishel, and her daughter, Sue (Larry) Kime; two grandchildren, Tami Ireland and Mathew Kime; four great-grandchildren: Zayne and Jaiana Ireland and Jacob and Breona Kime, all of Virden, IL; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
There will be graveside services at Virden Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 9, 2013, with Pastor Sue Sawers officiating.
A Celebration of Life Gathering will be from 2-3 p.m., Tuesday July 9, 2013, at the First Presbyterian Church in Virden with services at 3:00 p.m. at the church.
Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, Virden, Ill., or to the North Mac Public School Foundation.
