HOLCOMB, MO - Leonard William Dudleston, Jr., 88, a 86-year resident of Springfield passed away Wednesday, June 26, 2013, at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St Louis, Mo.

He was born June 30, 1924, the son of Leonard and Bertha Reeves Dudleston. Leonard graduated from Springfield High School in January of 1943. While still in high school he started working at the Illinois State Journal Register as an Apprentice Mailer. He worked there 47 years as a member of the Mailers Union and retired in 1989.

Leonard was a proud WWII veteran serving in the US Navy, inducted Jan. 26, 1943, and honorably discharged Feb. 22, 1946. He sang in the Navy Choir at Great Lakes and served as Machinist Mate on the USS Cascade.

He married Mary Stengel at Laurel Methodist Church on April, 8, 1951. She preceded him in death in 1998. He was also preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Roy Dudleston and Warren Dudleston; three sisters: Margaret Eleanor Rives, Fern Schmelz and Norma Ewing; a nephew, David Ewing; and daughter, Mary Lenn Dudleston.

Leonard was a member of Elliott Avenue Baptist Church, Springfield, Ill., and a 63-year member of St Paul's Lodge 500 AF & AM.

Surviving are his daughter, Nancy Ann Dudleston of Holcomb, Mo.; his son, William Ray Dudleston (Deborah Albright) and granddaughter, Victoria Dudleston, all of Sherman, Ill.; eight nieces and three nephews.

At his request remains were cremated and buried at Camp Butler National Cemetery on July 3, 2013.

A memorial service will be held at Fairview Baptist Church, 2001 N. 21st St., Springfield, IL at 1 p.m., Friday, July 12, 2013. Flowers are not necessary.
