Luther "Louie" M. Mellott
QUINCY, IL - Luther "Louie" M. Mellott, 90, formerly of Rapids City and Versailles, Ill., passed away Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2013, at the Illinois Veterans' Home, Quincy.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m., Monday Sept. 9, 2013, at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Milan. Visitation will be from 2-6 p.m., Sunday, at the funeral home. Burial will be in National Cemetery, Rock Island. Memorials may be left to the Illinois Veterans' Home or the Great River Honor Flight.
Mr. Mellott was born on June 8, 1923, in Pittsburgh, Penn., the son of Hiram and Estelle Mellott. He married Velma David on Nov. 22, 1947, in East Moline. Velma preceded him in death on May 2, 2002.
Louie focused on an occupation in trucking and was associated for over 44 years with Teamsters Local 371. He was a combat veteran of WWII, serving with the United States Navy in the Pacific Theatre.
Mr. Mellott was committed to veteran's affairs and held offices with the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. He was a former commander of Rock Island VFW Post 1303. He was also active as a volunteer with the American Red Cross. After retiring, Louie continued to ardently exercise his love of travel nationwide, hunting, trapshooting, and service to neighbors.
Survivors include his children and their spouses: David Mellott of Cedar City, Utah, Karen (Scott) Ferguson of Lincoln, Ill., Shelley (Hank) Barrera of Harrison, Ark.; grandsons, Erik Ferguson and Marcus (Jessica) Ferguson; great-granddaughter, Sophia; sisters, Beatrice Wielontek and Peg Inbody; and steadfast friend and companion, Juanita Roate.
He was also preceded in death by his siblings: Brady Mellott, Norman Mellott, Caroline Wilner, Margaret Miller, Mary Hymes, and Alma Woolums.
