Rasheedah Z. Ali
SPRINGFIELD, IL - Rasheedah Z. Ali (Becky Crawford), 63, passed away Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013, at Memorial Medical Center, surrounded by her family.
Rasheedah was born July 3, 1950, in Springfield, Ill. She was the second child of seven, and the oldest daughter, of Montez R. McIntosh and Zeddie Lee Crawford Sr.
In 1970 she married Rahman M. Ali Sr. and to this union four children were born.
Rasheedah was one of the founders of Imani Inc. which offered services to the homeless in Springfield and Sangamon County for over 15 years. Imani provided food, clothes, school supplies for the kids and educational training for parents, and other young adults needing assistance. She served as a past precinct committee woman and a member of the Illinois Democratic delegation. She had been a past Assistant Director for the Springfield Housing Authority and was employed as a customer representative at City Water, Light & Power. She was a member of Second Timothy Baptist Church, attending in her wheelchair until her health no longer allowed her to go.
Rasheedah was very community-minded and loved youth sports, which Imani sponsored two teams. The Imani Eagles football team and Springfield Central basketball team both were championship teams, earning many awards and accolades. Rasheedah was very active in her community; but, due to her failing health, was unable to attend games regularly. Yet, she went as often as she could to see "her kids" play (as she referred to the players). Everyone who met her felt like she was their friend, as was evidenced by the many individuals who came to visit her during her time of hospitalization. She joked with friends, old and new, and provided a smile to those she met who will remember her smile, making all she met feel like they were a well-loved family member.
She was preceded in death by both parents; one son, Robert L. Jackson; three brothers: Larry Sr., Zeddie Jr., and James Crawford; one sister, Baseemah Hameen-Dejesus; and one nephew, Lamar R.Crawford.
She leaves to cherish her life, her husband, Rahman Sr.; one son, Rahman M. (Patty) Ali II; two daughters, Jamillah N. (Myron) Braiser of Springfield, Ill., and Sakinah N. (Ralph) Granderson of St. Louis, Mo.; two sisters, Loujean (Otis) Crawford-Scott and Delores Crawford of Springfield, Ill.; one aunt, Nancy McIntosh of Houston, Miss.; three grandsons whom she raised, Jamal and Joseph A. Perry IV of Springfield, Ill., and Clarence L. Jones of Joliet, Ill.; five great-grandchildren; thirteen nieces and nephews; twenty great and eight great-greatgrand; as well as a host of cousins and friends.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. - noon, Friday, Dec. 13, 2013, with the funeral service beginning at noon, all at Second Timothy Baptist Church, 1122 E. Pine St., Springfield, IL 62703. Interment is private.
