Albert Chandler Brown
SPRINGFIELD, VA - Albert Chandler Brown, 102, died Friday, Dec. 6, 2013, in Springfield, Va.
Chandler was born in Cantrall, Ill., on Aug. 8, 1911, to Marie Ahrenkiel Brown and Albert Chandler Brown. He married Dorothy May Sullivan on May 31, 1941, and she preceded him in death on Sept. 17, 2007.
He is survived by his daughter, Iris (husband, Raymond) of Springfield, Va.; granddaughter, Laura Knell of Los Angeles, Calif.; grandson, Mark (wife, Rachel Cole) Knell; two great-grandchildren, Adeline and Isaac Knell of Lake Oswego, Ore.; and by his brother, Loren Brown, of Springfield, Ill.
He was preceded in death by brothers: Glenn, Paul and Kenneth.
Chandler graduated from Illinois State Normal in 1933 and was teaching in Athens when he was drafted into the U.S. Army Air Forces in WWII. He was wounded in France and returned in 1945 to be principal of Athens Grade School for more than 30 years. He was active in Athens Methodist Church, the American Legion Post #129, and was a founding member of the Athens Rotary Club. He was later honored by Rotary International for 50 years of perfect attendance.
Before they moved to Virginia in 2007, Chandler and Dorothy lived for 15 years at Lewis Memorial Christian Village in Springfield. The photo of Chandler was taken on his 102nd birthday in August.
Memorials may be sent to Athens Municipal Library or to United Methodist Committee on Relief.
Visitation will be at Mott & Henning Funeral Home in Athens on Thursday, Dec. 19, from 4-6 p.m., with the service at 11 a.m., Friday, Dec. 20, at Mott & Henning Funeral Home, Rev. Jarrett Wells officiating. Burial will be in Joel Hall Cemetery in Athens.
