SPRINGFIELD, IL - Robert Alan Johnson, 93, passed away Sunday, Dec. 29, 2013, at St. John's Hospice in Springfield.
He was born in Danville on Oct. 14, 1920, the son of Scoville and Opal Johnson. He married Darlene Pruitt in 1946.
Robert was a graduate of Danville High School and the University of Illinois, Champaign, in 1948. He proudly served his country during World War II. He joined the 15th Army Air Force, 772 Bombardment Squadron, serving as Flight Engineer flying B17's in Africa and Italy where he was awarded three Bronze Stars, an Air Medal and Victory Medal.
He retired from Illinois Bell Telephone in 1982 with 40 years of service.
He was a member of Laurel United Methodist Church, Telephone Pioneers, Island Bay Yacht Club, and University of Illinois Alumni Association. He had been a Redcoat Volunteer at Memorial Medical Center.
He is survived by his wife, Darlene of 67 years; two sons, Gregory (Brenda) of Springfield and Gordon (Doris) of St. Louis; a grandson, Brandon of Indianapolis; a brother, Lawrence (Laurel) of Largo, Fla.; a nephew and nieces of Georgia; and cousins, Harry Jamison (Judy) of Wheaton, and Richard Jamison (Nancy) of Homer.
Cremation rites have been accorded. A private family memorial service will be held at Boardman-Smith Funeral Chapel with Rev. Gerald King of Laurel United Methodist Church officiating. Private inurnment will occur at Mayfield Memorial Park, Carlinville, at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Laurel United Methodist Church or St. John's Hospice in Springfield.
