Winifred June Schweighart
SPRINGFIELD, IL - Winifred June Schweighart, 91, our beloved Mother and Nana, passed into God's hands on Saturday, January 11, 2014, at St. John's Hospital.
Winnie was with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren all thru her life and during her illness. She was born Winifred June Warner on June 21, 1922, to Roy Edward Warner and Flora Ann Burns Warner and moved to Springfield with her family in 1930. She attended Hay-Edwards school and Springfield High School graduating in 1940. On November 29, 1941, she married A. G. "Rusty" Schweighart. They left Springfield to begin their life together in Round Lake, Ill., and later returned in early 1943.
She is survived by daughters, Susan Stark, Sara Jane Swift, and Sandee Hanahan, and son, Mark (Karen); grandchildren, Renee Sommer (Steve), Stacia Stark, Christopher Runnels, Jennifer Swift Knepler, Jarod Schweighart (Nora), Rachel Strubinger (Dane) and Alison Schweighart; great-grandchildren, Chase and Abby Sommer, John, Will, Charlie and Henry Gerding, Lauren Knepler, Dominic and Sam Knepler, Weston Strubinger, and Billy and Bella Cooper; sister-in-law, Norma Schweighart Asher (Fred); and several nieces and nephews.
Winnie left Springfield in 1998 to live in Hilton Head Island, S.C., where she was actively involved with St. Francis By the Sea Catholic Church and the Hospice Thrift Shop. She twice won "Volunteer of the Year". She travelled with family to France and throughout the United States. She was a former member of Little Flower Catholic Church, Ladies Elks Club, and Daughters of the American Revolution, Captain William Hilton Chapter.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; sister, Mildred; brother, Jack; and son-in-law, Thomas J. Hanahan.
She was at her best as a Nana, always loving, nurturing, kind and caring. Our family feels blessed and happy to now have her watching over us.
