Mary Margaret "Peg" Farney

SPRINGFIELD, IL - Mary Margaret "Peg" Farney, 90, of Springfield, passed away Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014, at Mill Creek in Springfield.

She was born Oct. 28, 1923, in Springfield to Leo and Esther (Farnworth) Shea.

Peg graduated from St. Agnes School, Sacred Heart Academy, and Springfield Junior College. She attended the University of Illinois in Champaign until returning to Springfield to care for her mother. Before her marriage on Oct. 17, 1953, she worked for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. After raising her family, she worked for the Illinois Emergency and Disaster Agency, retiring in 1986. Peg was an avid bridge player, gardener, and flower arranger and belonged to the Springfield Garden Club for many years. She also supported the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and was a volunteer at the St. John's Hospital Gift Shop. She was known for her kindness and for her love of children and nature.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. William Farney, on Aug. 7, 1980, and two brothers, Leo Michael Shea and Lawrence Shea.

She is survived by her son, Dr. Thomas (Marianne) Farney of Hermiston, Ore.; daughter, Kathleen Farney (Sarunas Valiukenas) of Springfield; son, Coleman Farney of Springfield; a brother, Dr. Edward (Patricia) Shea of Denver, Colo.; granddaughters: Annamarie (Lewis) Rife, Barbara Farney, and Caitlin Farney, all of Portland, Ore.; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Her family is grateful for the excellent care and support provided by the Mill Creek staff.

Visitation: 9-11 a.m., Friday, Feb. 21, 2014, at St. Agnes Church.

Funeral Mass: 11 a.m., Friday, Feb. 21, 2014, at St. Agnes Church, the Rev. Robert Jallas officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
