Frederick Hoffmann Obituary

Frederick Bayard Hoffmann 1941 - 2016
Frederick Bayard Hoffmann, 74, of Springfield, passed away on Sunday, August 21, 2016 at his residence.
Fred was born on September 2, 1941 in Springfield, the son of George C. and Ines Catron Hoffmann. He married Kathleen A. Hutchins on July 24, 1971 in Lincoln, NE.
Fred, a 1959 graduate of Springfield High School, attended Swarthmore College and graduated from the University of Chicago in 1963. He subsequently attended the University of Illinois College of Law, earning his J.D. in 1967. Fred was in private practice for nearly 50 years, beginning with Hoffmann and Hoffmann and later with Sorling Northrup. Fred was involved with a number of community organizations, including serving for many years on the boards of the Illinois Symphony Orchestra and the Abraham Lincoln Association (past treasurer). He also served as president of the Sangamon County Historical Society.
Fred was devoted to his family. He was a raconteur with a wide circle of friends spanning his entire life. He was a man of many and varied interests who delighted in his grandchildren, including Sam, who arrived in the last days of his life. He nurtured life-long passions for music, architecture, art, and sports cars. Fred traveled widely – photographing the mountains and the desert southwest; attending golf tournaments with his brothers; and enjoying opera in Chicago, Seattle, and Santa Fe.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Fred is survived by his wife, Kathleen Hoffmann of Springfield; two daughters, Joan Hoffmann (Thomas Haard) of Clarksville, MD and Anne Hoffmann (Robert Mourlam) of Cedar Rapids, IA; four grandchildren, Frances and Maelle Haard and Max and Samuel Mourlam; three brothers, George C. (Irene, deceased) of Indianapolis, IN, Donald L. (Tessie) of Kansas City, MO, and John M. (Cynthia) of Champaign, IL; many nieces and nephews; and several cousins.
Visitation: Family will receive friends from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Friday, September 2, 2016 at Boardman-Smith Funeral Home, 800 South Grand Ave. West, Springfield.
Funeral Ceremony: 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 3, 2016 at First Presbyterian Church, 321 South 7th St., Springfield with Rev. Beth Wagner officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery.

One of the best human beings I've known. Smart, funny, well-read, broad interests, accomplished; but so approachable and with that rare characteristic of common human decency. We will miss you Fred.
