Edward Russell (Russ) Childs, 87, of Anacortes passed away at home with his loving wife, daughter, and granddaughter by his side, following a brief illness on Saturday, November 10, 2012.
He was born Edward Russell Childs on May 7, 1925 to Lute and Minnie Childs, being the third of five siblings.
Russ grew up in Anacortes and at the age of 16 he wanted to join the Navy, but couldn't because of his age and also being color blind. So he decided to go to work being a longshoreman, where he worked for two years.
One week after his 18th birthday, Russ enlisted in the U.S. Army, proudly serving during World War II in England, France, Germany, Naples, Foggia, Rome-Arno, Normandy, Rhineland, and Japan.
In 1948, following his service in the Army, Russ married the love of his life, Audrey Ronk in North Bend, Oregon.
Russ was a commercial salmon fisherman in Alaska and the Pacific Northwest, and a member of the Laborers Union Local 292 for 56 years.
Among his past times he was a longtime bowler and shot pool regularly with his many friends at the Anacortes Senior Center.
Russ was preceded in death by his brother, Douglas L. Childs; sisters, Norma (Childs) Carpenter, and Shirlee Mae (Childs) Cable.
He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Audrey; children, Cheryl Onstad of Anacortes and Edward Childs, Jr. of Farmington, New Mexico; grandson, Lute Childs of St. Helens, Oregon; granddaughters and spouses, Lynn and Dave Denton of Beaverton, Oregon and Richelle and Joel Fuik of Oak Harbor; great-grandsons, Colby and James Fuik and Seth Denton; sister, Beverly L. (Childs) and husband, W.D. Angus of Burlington; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, November 17, 2012 at Evans Funeral Chapel in Anacortes followed by interment with military honors at Fernhill Cemetery in Anacortes. A reception will follow interment at the Anacortes Elks Lodge.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of the Northwest.
Arrangements are in the care of Evans Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Inc., Anacortes, WA and the San Juan Islands. To share memories of Russ, please sign the online guest register at www.evanschapel.com.

I used to do repairs on the gillnetter the 'lute" for Russ. He was a very understanding man, and what I believe to be a very gentle soul. He even used to call me years later with questions on how to keep his little outboard motors running so he could sport fish yet another day. Rest in peace Russ and my deepest sympathy to your family.

Russ was one of a kind. Russ and Audrey were my brothers Godparents and when he passed away I adopted Audrey as my Godparents. They have always been there for me. We have all shared many laughs and tears over the last 58 years. I will miss you Russ and I love you Audrey, Cheryl and Ed. My heart goes out to you!
