David Wright, 94 and an Anacortes native, passed from this life on February 11, 2014.

Born in Anacortes to James O. and Catherine Schrindle-Wright on November 9, 1919, he was a lover of the sea.

David's love of the sea led him into the fishing world. He first sailed on now was one of the last surviving crew members of the famous Seattle based codfish schooner Wawona. At the age of 22, days after the US entered into World War II, he joined the Army where he rose to the rank of Master Sergeant, spending most of his service in the Aleutian Islands, garnering several medals, including a Bronze Star.

In 1947 David made one more trip on the Wawona, and then worked at Morrison's Sawmill, but his love of the sea brought him back to working as a commercial fisherman, fishing in Washington and Alaska on gillnetters and purse seiners, as well as on fish processers and tenders.

David was a member of Fidalgo Masonic Lodge #77 and had earned the 44th degree. He was also a past president of the Anacortes Eagles Aerie #249, where he was Santa Clause for many years.

Known as "Kite Man" in the '50s, also known to area bands and others as the "Train Whistle Blower", he will be missed by many.

David was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Dolly "Ruth" Wright, his daughter Danette Lyons (George), grandson Rex Izban, his brother Ralph Wright, and half-sister Barbara Jean.
