Eldon John "Listin" Montoya, 58, a resident of the Swinomish Indian community, passed away on Friday, May 23, 2014 at United General Hospital in Sedro-Woolley.
He was born in Alamosa, Colorado on February 21, 1956, the son of Santiago & Stella (Suazo) Montoya. He was raised and attended school in Pueblo, CO and graduated from Central High School with the class of 1974. He then enlisted in the U.S. Navy
, serving his country for four years.
After his discharge he moved to Skagit County and worked for the Norm Nelson Potato Farm cultivating potatoes for several years. He then worked as a commercial fisherman and clam harvester and worked at a variety of occupations with the Swinomish Community. For many years Eldon was one of the main cooks for the tribal Smokehouse, and was a member of the Swinomish Smokehouse Organization. He would also travel to other communities and assist with the cooking.
In 1989 he married Elizabeth Sampson in Mount Vernon and they made their home at the Swinomish Tribal Community.
Eldon is survived by his children, Mandy Wilbur and her husband Ralph of Shelton, William Montoya and Emily Montoya of La Conner and Lanie Montoya of Seattle; 2 grandsons, Jacob Pulsifer and Jeremy Wilbur; 3 brothers, David Suazo of Alamosa, CO, Eluid Suazo of Burley, ID, and Mark Montoya of Puyallup, WA; his sister, Sheila Montoya of Tacoma, WA and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Elizabeth and five brothers, Ronald, Paul & Robert Suazo and Anthony & Leslie Montoya.
A Prayer Service will be held on Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 6:00 PM with Funeral Services on Friday, May 30th at 10:00 AM at the Swinomish Tribal Community Gymnasium in La Conner with Father Dennis Donoghue officiating. Interment will follow at the Swinomish Indian Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the care of Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley.
