Henry "Hank" Van Pelt, 92, long time Skagit County resident passed away Saturday, November 17, 2012 in New Plymouth, Idaho.
He was born on August 21, 1920 in Abbenbrook, Holland to Simon and Johanna Van Pelt. At the age of six months the family came to the prairie in Canada and within a year moved to Edison, WA. In 1926, they moved to Renton and resided until 1935 when they settled on a farm on McLean Road in Mount Vernon.
In 1943 Hank married Ruth Holgate Reay and they raised their family on the farm. Hank worked the farm until he retired in 1997. After retiring, he moved to his property on Ovenell Road.
Hank was a charter member of the McLean Road Fire Department and was always very proud of that; even serving for a time as the Fire Chief.
In 2010, he moved to Idaho to be with his daughter, and remained there until his passing.
He is survived by his four children, Robert H. (and wife, Ann) Van Pelt, Richard H. Van Pelt, both of Mount Vernon, John Steven Van Pelt of La Conner and Janet R. Van Pelt of New Plymouth, Idaho; two brothers, John (and wife, Magna) Van Pelt, and Richard Van Pelt, all of Mount Vernon; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Hank was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth in 1990; his parents, Simon and Johanna; a sister and brother in law, Rosalie and Harlan Omholt; a grandson, Jesse Van Pelt; and a great-grandson, Seth.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, November 24, 2012 at 2:00 pm at Mount Vernon Cemetery. A celebration of Hank's life will follow at the McLean Road Fire Department.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the McLean Road Fire Department, Fire District #2, 15452 Beaver Marsh Rd, Mount Vernon, WA 98273.
