Beloved sweet mama, grandma, wife and sister Kathleen passed peacefully July 4th, 2013.
She was born September 20, 1926 near Portland, OR, where she attended innovative Kennedy School; her lifelong passion for nature and books was also born there while growing up in her parents horticultural and farmers' market business. The family later moved to Bellingham, WA, where she graduated from Bellingham High in 1943. She married Ralph Robert Kuhns and bore and raised three children. Later she returned to school, graduating from Western Washington State College in 1969, and going on to get a master's degree in Library Science from the University of Washington
. She was an Associate Professor and Science Reference Librarian at WWU until retiring in 1992.
She continued to share her love of books throughout her life, whether through reading to her children and grandchildren, helping students' research, or participating in book clubs; keenly interested in everything going on around her, she kept abreast of current events and enjoyed discussions with her Crones' group. Kathy played piano, and was an active patron of music; she loved poetry, gardening and watching the birds who visited her feeders. She was an inveterate world traveler and hiker of wild places, even hiking to Machu Picchu in Peru for her 80th birthday, and she loved spending time in Hawaii. Most of all, she loved her family; she was our sweet Mama and Grandma Kathy! She devoted much time and love to her grandkids, providing them with many wonderful experiences and opportunities, even delivering two of them! She was an incredible role model for all.
She was preceded in death by parents, three siblings, and her husband, ret. Col. Melvin Kernan.
She is survived by brother Jim Stephens and wife LaVerne, son Ralph Robert Kuhns, Jr. and wife Judy, daughter Kristine Kuhns, daughter Karen Kuhns-Hulse and husband Scott Hulse, and grandchildren Russell Kuhns, Shaylen Hulse, Miranda Soule and husband J'son Soule, Justis Hulse, Mikai Hulse, and Quinn Hulse.
A celebration of her life will be held July 27 at La Conner Flats Gardens from 1 to 5 PM, with sharing and remembrance time at 2 PM. Refreshments will be provided. La Conner Flats is located at 15920 Best Road, Mount Vernon, WA, just south of Christianson's Nursery.
