Amazing mother, grand-mother, great-grandmother, & friend, Jean Swanland passed away peacefully at her home in Burlington on Friday, November 30th, 2012 from Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis.
Jean was adopted as a baby to parents Dr. Lee Ricaud and Mary R. Martin in Wilmington, North Carolina. At the age of six months she and her family relocated to Washington D.C.
Jean's father passed away when she was three years old.
She attended Woodrow Wilson High School and graduated in 1948.
She worked for the US Government at the Pentagon until she married William Swanland in 1951 in D.C. and moved to Mount Vernon in 1954. Jean and Bill purchased the Little Mountain Grocery in Mount Vernon and sold it shortly thereafter to become co-owners in a crop-dusting business. This allowed Jean to devote herself to raising her children for the next few years. Jean loved her home in Westside Mount Vernon and said that the Skagit Valley and all of its beauty would always be considered her home. She was best known as "Swannie" to her co-workers and students as a Secretary for Mount Vernon High School for many years. It was her favorite job of all time. She loved her beloved Bulldogs!
Jean was extremely proud of her family and would tell anyone who would listen. Jean was a people person through and through and would always try to catch your eye with a smile and a "Hello" all while warmly welcoming you with introductions. Jean kept her sense of humor until the end and her positivity was contagious with her "happy thoughts".
She was involved in many social groups; her breakfast group, her Bunko group, her Tops group, her retired secretaries group, her golden girls golfing group, her Bridge group, and her bible study group. She had more friends than she could count and she loved them all dearly as they did her.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents Dr. Lee Ricaud & Mary Martin.
She is survived by her four children; John Swanland (Yew-Wooi) of Melbourne, Australia, Linda Scott (Jon) of Mount Vernon, Sue Egbert (Tim) of Burlington, and Carol Snyder (Todd) of Sedro-Woolley, her eight grandchildren; Jacob Scott (Holly), Riley Scott (Bianca), Khalid El-ali, Sara El-ali, Taylor Egbert, Cynthia Egbert, Shayna Snyder, and Dawson Snyder, and her great grandson; Kennedy Scott.
In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to a MVHS scholarship memorial fund that has been set up in her name at any Skagit State Bank. The family would like to thank the staff at Skagit Valley Senior Village (especially Suzanne) and Skagit Hospice for the loving care.
A celebration of Jean's life will be held on Saturday, December 8th, 2012 at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Mount Vernon. The service will begin at 1:00pm followed by a reception.
