Robert Lewis "Bob" Mickelson, 81, a resident of Sedro-Woolley, passed away at his home, surrounded by his family, on Tuesday, January 29, 2013.
He was born on April 12, 1931 in Camas, Washington, the son of Leonard & Margaret (Vandemarr) Mickelson.
He was raised and attended school in Camas and Vancouver, Washington, graduating from Vancouver High School with the class of 1949 and went on to attend Clark Junior College.
Bob and his wife Phyllis were married in 1950 and they moved to Seattle where he attended the University of Washington
, studying Forestry. He later did a year-long apprenticeship with Bob Woerner, a Landscape Architect based in Seattle.
Bob worked as a landscape designer and contractor for many years, completing both residential and business projects in Washington, Idaho, and Alaska. His favorite part of many of the projects were the water features he created within his designs. For several years during this time he was head grounds keeper at Western Washington University, bringing with him to the job his many creative talents as a landscape designer.
He was united in marriage to Phyllis Googins in Vancouver, Washington on October 6, 1950. During the later years of their marriage, Bob and Phyllis were very active in the Covenant Church, traveling extensively as missionaries for the church in Alaska, helping to establish Alaska Christian Collage in Soldatna.
Bob is survived by his wife of 62 years, Phyllis; his children, Ann Jeffries (Jeff), Wendy Sekora (Jack), Jill Tyler (Steve), and Garth Mickelson (Vicki); his sister, Mildred Byers; his brother, Bill Mickelson; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews and his beloved pets, Dooley, Jo, Patrick & Buddy.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Meaghan Mulligan and a sister, Ruth Mattson.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, February 9, 2013 at 2:00 PM at the Community Covenant Church in Clear Lake Washington with Pastor Tim Hedberg officiating. There will be a time of food and sharing after the service.
Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Northwest or the Cancer Care Center at Skagit Valley Hospital. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley.
