Walter E. "Nub" Poppe passed away after a long illness on February 20, 2014 in La Conner, WA. He was born in Mount Vernon, WA on November 13, 1935.
While in high school Nub received many accolades for his sporting prowess. He was involved in football, basketball (in which he was chosen All Northwest) and baseball. He enjoyed swimming at the local YMCA where he was a participant on their swim team.
Nub retired from his own construction business, Nub Poppe Building Company. He was also a commercial fisherman. In his retirement he and Mary were members of the Skagit Valley Golf Club. Other interests were "Club 54", rooting for the Huskies, Mariners, and Seahawks. Mary and Nub enjoyed travelling and cruising. Nub's granddaughter and great grandchildren were the light of his life.
Nub was a courageous warrior who fought the good fight. He will be missed by his family and many supportive friends.
Nub was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Alleen Poppe; his first wife, Barbara Poppe; and his daughter, Vickie Crane.
He is survived by his wife, Mary at the family home. In addition granddaughter, Amber Croston of Avon and great-granddaughter, Kaylee Croston and great grandson, Ethan Croston; also two sisters, Janet (and husband, Hal) Rowe of Edmonds, WA, and Marilyn (and husband, Vern) Judd of Port Orchard; also his step children, Alison Rehnberg, Maile Rehnberg, Jay Rehnberg and Eric Rehnberg; as well as many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 28, 2014 at 1:00 pm at the Mount Vernon Presbyterian Church.
