William (Bill) Hale Thayer, 72, passed away on Wednesday, March 12, 2014 in Mt. Vernon, Washington as a result of a stroke he suffered on February 13, 2014.

Bill was born on January 14, 1942 in Anacortes, to Elvin (Pete) and Violet (Vi) Thayer.

Bill graduated from Anacortes High School in 1961 where he excelled in football, basketball and baseball.

On November 24, 1961, Bill married his childhood sweetheart, Helen. They moved to Bellingham in 1966, where they raised their family. Bill worked as an executive chef for the Leopold Hotel and later the Bellingham Golf and Country Club. After taking a position with Island Hospital in Anacortes, Bill and Helen moved back to Skagit County in 1992, where he served until his retirement in 2005 as Manager of Dietary and Environmental Services.

Bill was a 23 year member of the Anacortes Chapter of Kiwanis, serving as Chapter president in 1998. After moving to Burlington, Bill took up bicycle riding and become an active member of the Skagit Bicycle Club, serving multiple terms as club president. Bill and Helen have been long time members and volunteers of Emmanuel Baptist Church, with Bill serving as president of his Ambassadors Sunday school class.

In retirement, Bill started volunteering with the Mt. Vernon Police Depart., Citizens on Pro-Active Patrol (COPPs) program.

Bill is survived by his wife of 52 years, Helen; children, Shelly (Clyde) Christensen, Stacy (John) Marlowe, Scott (Alison) Thayer; and Lori (Jon) Pennell; grandchildren, Erika Christensen, Jake and Rose Marlowe, and Evan and Justin Pennell; sisters, Nikki (Del) Sturgis, Penny Willoughby, ViAnn (Bill) Matson, and Dina (Bruce) Ceynar; brother-in-law, Jim Graves; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Pete and Vi; father-in-law, Richard James; sister, Karla Graves; and brother-in-law, Jim Willoughby.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, March 24, 2014 at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 1515 East College Way, in Mt. Vernon.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Anacortes noon chapter of the Kiwanis Club or Emmanuel Baptist Church.
