AUDREY CARLSON-JOHNSON Obituary

Audrey I. Carlson-Johnson, 74, of Mount Vernon, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend passed away on February 28, 2012 following a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born on May 1, 1937 in Anacortes, the daughter of Ilo and LeElla Matteson. She attended both the Conway and Mount Vernon school districts before graduating from Sedro-Woolley High School in 1955.

On May 29, 1957 she married Ken Carlson who preceded her in death on August 1, 1997. She then married Richard Johnson on November 21, 2003.

Audrey is survived by a large and loving family who will miss the wagon master's warm and beautiful smile, kind heart and mischievous spirit.

In addition to her husband Richard, Audrey leaves behind daughter Susan Lazzari and her sons Jeff, Jason and Jake Lazzari; her daughter and son-in-law Kathy and Jay Duffy, their son Aaron Duffy, and daughter and son-in-law Kira and David Willard and their sons Talon and Coen; step daughter and son-in-law Lynn and Randy Van Wieringen and their children Kayla, Justin, Hailey and Ellie; step son Mike Johnson and his significant other Sonya Brown and their children Madison, Kylie, Dylan and Mike's step son Jon Thoms; sister Helen Vaux; two brothers and sister-in-laws Jim and Kaye Matteson and Ken and Carole Matteson; two brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws, Carl and Judy Carlson, and Leonard and Gail Carlson; two sister-in-laws and brother-in-laws Marie and Dick Trueman and Alice and Ron Maxfield; as well as numerous nieces and nephews, and extended family and friends.

Audrey enjoyed trips to Winthrop, time spent at Camp Grande and her many travels with Richard. She was the number one fan for all of her grandchildren's and great-grand children's many school, sports and extra activities. Known to her grand children and great grand children as "Grammie", she will be dearly missed and remembered for her great hugs and kisses, as well as her candy drawer. Cherishing time spent with family and friends, she touched the lives of so many who will forever remember her warm heart.

Audrey was a beautiful, elegant lady. She was always fun to be around and was always kind to me and my family. She always had candy for my kids and when they were younger they would hear Kayla and Justin call her Grammie and would ask if they could call her Grammie too. She would smile and say of course! She will be greatly missed. She was taken from us too soon.

As neighbors of Audrey and Richard we have known them for the past 7 years. We will miss seeing the seasonal and special occasion decorations that Audrey would have at her front porch. We will miss seeing her and Richard enjoying their patio as she smiled that bright smile and gave us a friendly wave and hello. Audrey, these 2 neighbors will miss you dearly. Our prayers go out to you, to Richard, and to your family. Jim and Cassi Mitchell

Dear Audrey,

You were a true domestic goddess who also handled running a business with your husband, ( that alone qualifies any women for sainthood) while also raising a family. Martha Stewart could learn a few tips from you alright, especially your dedicication to ironing day. What I loved about you most was your love of life. You were one of the happiest, kindest people I know. Love always!

Grammie is one of the few people I've met who had the ability to put a smile on my face, whether she was there or not. She will forever have this effect on me.

Audrey was a cousin of ours and though many years have passed in between visiting with her, she brings back a lot of memories of the farm in Mt Vernon we used to visit as children. Always a fun thing to do and chase cows in the fields, jump on the Hay in the Barn,Scared to death of the farm life but loved hanging out with all our cousins. She always had a bright shiny star around her and I am sure she always portrayed it no matter what she did. I am sure she was looking forward to seeing our family who has passed on before her and they are surely welcoming that bright shiny face into their arms. You will be missed cousin, may you once again run through those green fields of grass. Lovingly, Susan (Another Matteson girl!)

To my dear, precious “angel” friend. Audrey, you are free now to fly with the heavenly angels with God given wings. Heaven's gain is our loss. I will not say goodbye, I will say until we meet again. I love you dearly and was so very blessed to have your love and friendship in my life.

My heart is broken as Adurey has always been a favorite cousin. She was so very special to all the members of the Matteson family. As cousins all grow apart,as families do, she was the "informer". A very caring, loving person, always in attendance on aunts and uncles special occasions. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with the family.
