ROBERT HORTON Obituary

Bob or Duane as he was known to his family and old school friends was born at home on November 26, 1928 to Herbert & Margaret Horton on what is now Horton Lane in Mount Vernon. He died on February 8th at his home not far from there with his wife Margaret and some of his family by his side.

He attended local schools and graduated from Mount Vernon High School with the class of 1946. He then joined the Army and served in Korea.

He had 5 sons Glen (Bonnie) Gene ( Alma) Patrick (Lorie) Paul (Anna) and Scott who died in infancy. He had 7 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.

In August 1994 he married Margaret Oliver in Bellingham. He was much loved by her children Vanessa (John) Rowena (Don) Lucy (Jim) Chris (Holly) and Jeremy (Nancy) and her 8 grandchildren.

He is survived by his younger sister Joyce (Bob) Shaffer.

He worked as an operating engineer for a lot of years building many roads in the area. He was one of the first car racers at Skagit Speedway. He enjoyed flying, fishing and woodworking. He often put up a tough front but was a kind generous gentleman underneath with a heart of gold.

He will be missed.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Skagit Hospice Foundation P.O. Box 137 Mount Vernon WA. 98273.

A Graveside Service with Military Honors will be held Saturday, February 12, 2010, 2:00pm at Hawthorne Memorial Park 1825 E. College Way, Mount Vernon, WA followed by a Reception in the Hawthorne Reception Room.

Arrangements are under the care of Hawthorne Funeral Home, Mount Vernon.

Bob Horton... Whats the best way to describe a good friend..an exceptional equipment operator, an old grizzly bear with a heart of gold...His woodworking skills were the best. I had the pleasure of working around Bob the last 11 years.... 50 years in the Operators Union, what a remarkable feat! Stories I will forever cherish.... You will be deeply missed. R.I.P my friend.

Bob was a good friend to my dad for many years. He took me on my very first airplane ride when I was just a little girl. He was a kind and wonderful man who I will remember always. He will be greatly missed by all in our family. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

You will be terribly missed. The girls loved coming up and being able to raid his treasure chest. We will also miss all the wonderful stories of his past and our personal favorite story of him finding the woolly mammoth tusk. We love you and wish had had more time with you. You will always be in our great memories.
Love Rick, Olivia, Savanah & Paytin

So very glad I met Bob. His stories of life's adventures were amazing. From working on tug boats, The Alaska pipeline... operating the biggest equipment...to racing. His "fishing stories" were the best. By watching him, I would swear that Bob could thread a needle with an excavator. I will miss his humor, charisma and making chocolate chip cookies for him.
