LLOYD WESTPHALL Obituary

Lloyd Keith "Bill" Westphall, 84, of Mount Vernon passed away Thursday, March 10, 2011.

He was born March 8, 1927 in Mount Vernon to Ernest L. and May (Hancock) Westphall and graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1944.

Bill served in the U.S. Army from 1945 - 1947 during which time he ran a tire shop in Zama, Japan. After his military service he worked as an auto body repairman for Smith & Whitcomb; Dally's; and Gravley Auto Body shops.

Bill was active in the Legion Club, and served as a volunteer at the Big Lake Fire Department as a member, and then chief. Later in life he worked as the Shelter Bay Maintenance Foreman for the Shelter Bay Community. Bill studied and became certified at Shelter Bay to manage and operate the sewer treatment plant and the water distribution system. He also managed all other maintenance issues at Shelter Bay before retiring to La Conner in 1992.

Bill had an awesome talent for designing and building many items through carpentry for his own household, as well as for others.

For many years he enjoyed watching Seahawks Football and he loved music of all kinds. He "knew no strangers", was friendly to all, and was loved by many.

Among other things, he will be remembered for his sense of humor and for his comical expressions such as, "Is everyone behaving?" or "Don't do anything I'd do!" When asked how he was doing, his standard answer was, "Steady by Jerks!"

Bill is survived by his wife, Nadene "Dee" of Mount Vernon; four daughters, Lynda Hogan (and husband Robin) of Pomeroy, WA, Merri Westphall (and William Nogle) of Bremerton, WA, Virginia Farmer (and husband, Dennis) of Big Lake, WA and Lisa Westphall of Bellingham, WA; eight grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Marian "Tommy" Foss and Margaret Hamel; one grandson; and one great-grandson.

At Bill's request there will be no services.

Memorials may be given to Hospice of the Northwest, PO Box 1376, Mount Vernon, WA or to a charity of your choice.

Arrangements are under the care of Kern Funeral Home.
