LAVETA MUSSER Obituary

Laveta went home to be with her Lord on June 3, 2011.

She was born on January 26, 1919 in Walla Walla, Washington to Granville & Rachel McCabe. Her father died when she was 15 months old.

Her mother was remarried to William Kuehl, who was a loving father to her.

She graduated from Waitsburg High School in 1936. After high school she moved to Tieton and then Yakima.

In 1945 she moved to Seattle working for Firestone. In 1946 she moved to Mount Vernon and married Ken Musser. Together they owned Musser's Hardware until retiring in 1974.

Laveta was a generous and loving person helping others. She was member of Mount Vernon Presbyterian church for many years. She served in many capacities including financial secretary, Sunday school teacher, deacon, elder, Care Team and many other services. She grew in her faith when she studied the bible with Bible Study Fellowship also teaching the children who came with their mothers. She was a talented seamstress, sewing clothes for herself and family members. She received a special vocational certificate to teach and taught sewing at Skagit Valley College for several years. She was member of a local Seattle Children's Hospital Guild for many years making quiet books for the patients at the hospital. She enjoyed playing bridge with a bridge club group and also played golf occasionally.

After her husband died in 1999 she spent several winters in Yuma, Arizona where her sister-in-law spent winters. She sold her house in August 2010 after moving to live with her daughter and son-in-law in Tukwila in March 2010. We were blessed to have her with us for that time. She was a strong woman who lived her faith every day. In December 2010 she had a stroke which limited her mobility. She never recovered to be independent again.

She is survived by her daughter, Colleen Richards (John) Tukwila; sons, Ken Musser Jr (Vicki) Centralia, Brian Musser, Kent; grandchildren, Jennifer Hirst (Matt) Puyallup, Sarah Hanavi (Aaron) Seattle, Jeff Musser (Sara) Tacoma, Michael Musser, Tacoma; step grandchildren, Nichole, Ashley and Matthew Lloyd, Centralia, Richard Casebolt Jr. (Teresa), Chris Knutz (Melissa), David Casebolt; four great-grandchildren, 7 step great grandchildren; sister, Lois Joann Kuehl, Utah; sisters-in-law, Grace McCabe, College Place, and Birdie Kuehl, Yakima; and various nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ken; brothers, Emery McCabe and Don Kuehl; and sister, June Thompson.

She will be missed greatly by her family and friends.

A memorial service is planned for Saturday, June 11 at 3:00 p.m. at the Mount Vernon Presbyterian Church, 1511 E Broadway, Mount Vernon.

In lieu of flowers her family suggests donations to Mount Vernon Presbyterian Church and the Seattle Children's Hospital Foundation, M/S S-200, P.O. Box 5371, Seattle, WA 98145-9807.

Laveta was a friend and was a guiding light for the growth of my faith. We shared a wealth of experiences as members of our church. These are memories I cherish. When I started coming to the church in the mid 60's. I met her when my Mom was paired with her to teach SS in a little cramped room of the downtown church. I recall the time I helped Laveta make her coleslaw, an amazing and complex cooked dressing for the church barbeque. One time I was at the house when she had the fabric sample books spread out. Laveta's skill was evident in the tailored clothing she shared. I think of her as a classic homemaker and a faithful Christian who knew how to live and teach the Christian life. Laveta will always be with me.

Colleen and family

Was real sorry to read about the passing of your mother. I also worked for Musser's Hardware one Christmas. They were very nice people to work for and one of the last neighborhood hardware stores. Sounds like she lived a wonderful life and also touched many lives. Take care and think of her often as I know you will.

Laveta was the first neighbor to greet us with a plate of delicious cookies when we moved to her block 11 years ago. She was a very active, sweet lady and she put her faith into action. Laveta safely drove her white car into her 90's! She was a great neighbor. My prayers of comfort to the family, she will be missed.

I unfortunately didn't know Mrs. Musser all that well, I was blessed to get to meet her on the occasions she joined my Aunt Clleen and Uncle John at some of our celebrations. So I got to know her as Aunt Colleen's mom, or my cousins grandmother and the love they had for this very special lady was very evident. She was always very kind and happy to talk to anyone whenever she was around, I enjoyed having her in my home. Her presence will be missed for even those of us who didn't know her as much as her family did. As for my Aunt, Uncle and Cousins we are so sorry for the loss of this wonderful woman in your lives, you are in our hearts and prayers.
All our love, Casey, Mindy and the kids.

I was employed at Musser's Hardware for a short time and got to know the Musser Family well. In fact, my brother John is married to their daugher Colleen. I consider them an integral part of my famiy and I know that Laveta will be sorely missed by all those whose lives she touched. I will always remeber in joy, what a sweet, kind, lovely lady she was. I wish I could be there with my family at this time. My thoughts are with you always. Jack Richards
