JAMES HANNAH Obituary

James Graham Hannah of Anacortes, died February 15, 2011 in Anacortes. He was born to Essie and James Hannah in Weed, California on the slopes of Mount Shasta, on February 19, 1928.

Jim was married to Beverly for 44 years until her death in 1995.

He is survived by his son, Scott Hannah (and Raye White) of Grants Pass, OR; daughter, Karen (Hannah) Huber and her husband Curtis of Anacortes, WA; grandson, Dan Huber (and Kate) of Seattle, WA; and his dear companion, Mary Moore, of Denver, CO.

Jim learned to fly when he was about 16 years old, and flying remained a passion throughout his life. He joined United Airlines in 1955 and often said he was the luckiest man alive to have worked in a job he would have paid to do. Jim worked as both a pilot and in management was Chief Pilot of the Seattle base for many years and ended his career flying routes to Hong Kong and Singapore as a DC-10 captain.

In retirement he was president of the local chapter of the Washington Pilots Association, a member of the Quiet Birdmen (QB's), and enjoyed many travels with Mary.

Jim had a big sense of humor and was known for his quick puns. He was a great Dad and grandfather - his grandson and he called each other Putz and Maroon, from the movie Grumpy Old Men.

He will be dearly missed by his many friends and family.

A celebration of his life will be held in the spring contact the family if you want to receive notice.

To share his passion for flying with future generations, memorial gifts may be sent to the Aviation Academy, c/o Snohomish County Airport / Paine Field, 3220 100th Street SW, Everett, WA, 98204. This program brings the experience of flying and mechanics to 13-18 year olds with dreams like Jim's.

Arrangements are in the care of Evans Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Inc., Anacortes, WA and the San Juan Islands. To share memories of Jim, please sign the online guest register at www.evanschapel.com.

I flew with Jim on one of his early flights as captain. Always one with a sense of humor he said, "I was told that when I made captain I would get a little respect. They were exactly right, I have received little respect!'

I flew with Jim several times and always enjoyed his leadership style, sense of humor, and friendship. A darned good pilot who set a good example for all to follow. He will surely be missed by many of us. John Reed

Jim was one of a kind. We enjoyed many telephone calls between Washington state and Florida and luckily we were able to get together a few times since retirement. His sense of humor would come out of the blue and make our conversations a real hoot.
He was lucky to have Mary with him as much as possible.

A man of integrity, humor, and professionalism. I was fortunate to have worked with him in the Chicago office. God only turns out a few men like this. J.O. Martin

Jim was my boss when I was a FLight Manager at SFOFO. He was, by far, the best boss I ever had. His quiet sense of humor would pop up at opportune moments, just in time to relieve tension. I learned more from observing his managmemnt style than I could have from any textbook.

Jim, you will be sorely missed...

What can I say. Jim was the best. He was a man of integrity. A caring man. I only wish I could have visited him before his passing.

Jim was not only a good friend but a great boss, people like Jim don't come along very often, he will be missed

I flew with Jim many times and enjoyed his wonderful sense of humor and his professional approach to flying. He was saddened by the events of 1985 and even though he was in management at the time, distanced himself from the stance he was obligated to adopt. He was liked and respected by so many of us. What a good man!

Jim was one of the few that everyone in the United Pilot Group respected, whether he was flying on the line or in management. In his heart, you knew he was one of you, a pilot first and foremost. Godspeed, Captain Jim...
